Places to visit : les Alpilles and the Camargue

Saint Rémy de Provence, birthplace of the medieval astrologist Nostradamus, with the narrow streets of its old village centre well-known for traditional festivals and  lively street market every Wednesday; and the impressive Roman antiquities of Glanum, the Monastery of Saint Paul de Mausole that provided inspiration for Van Gogh from 1889 to 1890.

Les Baux-de-Provence: spectacular, beautifully-preserved village high in Les Alpilles, with its ruined castle dominating the plain below with sensational views. Founded by the powerful medieval Lords of Baux, steeped in history, an early-morning visit is unforgettable.

Arles, rich with Roman antiquities, with its beautiful arena and its greco-roman temple, its Provencal culture and festivals, long a Unesco World Heritage centre, Arles is the gateway to the Camargue… Follow in the shadow of Van Gogh, or shop for traditional fabrics or the haute couture of Christian Lacroix… or in the typical street markets on Wednesday and Saturday mornings.

The Camargue: One of the most beautiful natural areas of Europe, abundant with wild-life, its pink flamingos, the famous white horses and black bulls raised by the gardiens; and for the sea-side town of Les-Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer with its expansive beaches.

Other villages in Les Alpilles… the pretty village of Maillane, birthplace of Frédéric Mistral, Nobel prize-winning poet and champion of the Provençal language… Maussane-les-Alpilles, celebrated for its museum of Santons -- the clay figuerines that ornament the Christmas crib… Fontvieille: renowned for the Moulin de Daudet, inspiration of author Alphonse Daudet’s celebrated Lettres de mon Moulin… Mouriès, renowned for its superb, award-winning olive-oil production... Eygalières, the beautiful, with narrow streets winding to its ancient  hill-top ‘old town’, the 12th century Chapelle St.Sixte and its lively street market every Friday.
